What is happening this week:

Recapping GBC's Visit to Westwood

"Westwood... It's home. It's people."

So began an introduction to Cincinnati's largest communities -- not to mention, one of its oldest -- during GBC's first Community Immersion of the year. On Saturday, March 25, approximately 40 people joined a tour hosted by Give Back Cincinnati, along with its partners the Westwood Historical Society, WestCURC and Westwood Works. The group learned more about what makes this west side neighborhood tick, including:

  • Westwood is Cincinnati largest suburb, with more than 30,000 residents and 5.7 square miles of space;
  • The Village of Westwood was first incorporated in 1868, and was annexed into the City of Cincinnati in 1896;
  • Westwood's diverse architectural styles -- Victorian, Tudor and Arts & Crafts -- are reflective of the suburb's greatest periods of economic growth;
  • The neighborhood's most well-known resident is James N. Gamble (of Procter & Gamble fame), who lived in Westwood from 1870 until his death in 1872.

The event wasn't just a history lesson, though. Attendees enjoyed presentations from Madcap Puppet Theatre, Mother of Mercy High School and a wine tasting/after party at Henke Winery.

Thank you to all who attended this event. You can click here for photos from the tour!

See Naked Karate Girls at Opening Day (and volunteer with us!)

GO REDS! Opening Day is this coming Thursday, March 31, and the biggest party in the city will be at Fountain Square. There will be plenty of food, drinks, live music -- including special guests, the Naked Karate Girls! -- and of course, Cincinnati Reds baseball.

GBC members will volunteer from 8am to 8pm - selling beer, manning security check points and making sure events on Fountain Square run smoothly. Care to help? Volunteer slots are still available... we especially need volunteers for the late afternoon shift (4pm to 8pm) so if you have the day off and can spare a few hours, we'd love to have you!

Already signed up to volunteer? Please dress for the weather! This event will take place outside, and as we know, Cincinnati weather can be unpredictable! Also, there will be limited space in the GBC booth for personal items, so we encourage you to bring only the essentials (ID, car keys, etc.) with you.

Salsa Para Xela a Success!

The Give Back Beyond team would like to offer a huge, "THANK YOU!" to those who attended Salsa Para Xela event -- held at LUNAR on Friday, March 25. The fundraiser netted about $1,700 to cover travel costs for the trip. Photos and personal stories from the trip will be featured in the newsletter, so thank you to all who helped make this service travel trip possible!

The Xela travel team leaves on Saturday for Guatemala. Give Back Cincinnati wishes the team good luck and safe travels!

Greater Cincinnati Clean Up is April 16!

We are less than three weeks away from the Greater Cincinnati Cleanup, and it’s shaping up to be an incredible event!

As part of the Great American Cleanup, the Greater Cincinnati Cleanup will have volunteers landscaping, removing trash and debris from streets and alleyways, and painting in Over-The-Rhine with Future Blooms.

This year’s event is part of the Neighborhood Enhancement Program, a 90-day, collaborative effort between City departments, neighborhood residents and community organizations that will focus on developing neighborhood assets in Over-the-Rhine and Bond Hill. Next week’s newsletter will include even more information about all the great work being done in the Over-The-Rhine neighborhood, so be sure to check it out!

Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all volunteers, and when the work is done, we’ll toast to our success and new friendships at an after-party at Neon’s. Buses will be transporting volunteers to and from the work sites and the after-party, and we hope everyone will join us for the fun!

Registration is now open, so mark your calendar to volunteer with us!
