Hometown Harvest: Fall Food and Clothing Drive

When:Saturday, October 20, 2007
Time:8:30:00 AM - 3:00:00 PM
Location:Fountain Square, Downtown Cincinnati
Description:Give Back Cincinnati members, including members of the Freedom Project, gathered at Fountain Square and three area Kroger stores (Western Hills, Queen City, and Hyde Park) to receive donations of non-perishable food and clothing for St. Vincent de Paul.

Give Back Cincinnati chooses October to make the donation in order to aid St. Vincent de Paul during its busiest time of year – the Fall, Winter and the holiday season. Last year St. Vincent de Paul provided the basic necessities of life to over 70,000 of our local neighbors in need, in Greater Cincinnati and Hamilton County through their 700 community volunteers.

Give Back gathers approximately 30,000 pounds of goods to St. Vincent de Paul during this annual effort. With help from people looking to clean out their closets and pantries, we can supply critical food and clothing to help those in need bridge financial gaps in their lives.

94.9 The Sound will be broadcasting from Fountain Square throughout the project. Between gathering donations volunteers will be enjoying great music and a ‘tailgate’ atmosphere. Donors won’t be left out of the fun, as there will be activities provided to reward their generosity.

Fountain Square is the headquarters of the event. Donors can pull up to the corner of Vine and Fifth Streets to unload. Also participating in the event are three area Kroger stores: Queen City (4777 Kenard Avenue), Hyde Park (3760 Paxton Avenue), and Western Hills (6165 Glenway Avenue). From 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., volunteers will be stationed at all four locations to accept donations.

Afterwards, volunteers will load all the donations and bring them to the St. Vincent de Paul, then head to the Lodge Bar to celebrate the event.

The event planning committee was comprised of members of the Freedom Project, a joint program between Give Back Cincinnati and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The Food & Clothing drive is the final project of the year long Freedom Project which aims to bring together diverse members of the community for service, dialogue, and relationship building.
